Apple Pan Dowdy Recipe

Description: This is one of many recipes we found in Grandma's collection. It was just in the pile, waiting for someone to re-discover it, and make it. We hope you give it a try.

Note: This is similar to Apple Crisp. But, it has more ingredients.

1 1/2 quarts Apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Flour
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1/8 teaspoon Cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon Vinegar (optional)
1 cup Water
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
1 Tablespoon Butter

Topping Ingredients:
1 cup Flour
2 teaspoons Baking Powder
2 1/2 tablespoons Shortening
1/2 teaspoons Salt
3/4 cup Milk

How to Make Apple Pan Dowdy:
  1. In a large sauce pan, mix sugar, flour, and salt.
  2. Add vinegar and water, stir well.
  3. Cook over low heat until thick, stirring constantly.
  4. Remove from heat, allow to cool.
  5. Add vanilla, spices, and butter.
  6. Place apple slices into a greased glass baking dish.
  7. Pour syrup over apples, set aside.

Topping Directions:

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt and baking powder.
  2. Stir in shortening and mix until lumps are pea sized.
  3. Add milk and stir until flour mixture is wet.
  4. Pour over apples.
  5. Bake in oven at 400 F for 40 minutes.
  6. Serve hot.

Tip: Serve plain, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or whipped topping.
