A major Cicada brood emergence can cause serious damage to your trees, bushes, and shrubs. No one has an estimate of the number that emerge each spring. But, they emerge literally by the billions. Cicada tree and bush damage can be fatal to small trees and bushes. Damage is incurred when the female deposits her eggs into a slit she cuts into small branches. With a large infestation, there are so many females laying eggs in the branches, that the tree is damaged or even killed. Larges trees can be damaged, too. However, large trees can better withstand the damage. Insecticides are not effective. 1/4-inch insect pest netting is effective. Here are some cicada damage pictures. It shows what these insects do to unprotected trees and bushes.

Insecticides are ineffective on these large insects.
Insect Netting is the most effective way to protect young trees and shrubs, which are most susceptible. Because Cicadas are large insects, 1/4″ mesh netting is effective. Wrap pest netting completely around the tree and tie or seal it off, to keep any insects from finding an entryway.
Important Note: Even if the Cicadas have emerged in your area, you have 5-10 days to cover young trees before the female begins to cause damage, as she lays her eggs.
