Grandma's Apple Cake Recipe

When cooler fall weather arrives and the apples are ripe, it's time to cook with apples. You and your family will enjoy this old recipe from Grandma's cookbook collection.

Apple Cake Ingredients:

  • 1/4 pound butter or margarine

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 eggs, separated

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 4 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 2/3 cups milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Topping Ingredients:

  • 3-4 apples, peeled and sliced into eighths
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar


Preparation Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl.

  3. Add well beaten egg yolks.

  4. Sift together dry ingredient, then add to batter along with the milk.

  5. Beat until smooth.

  6. Fold in well beaten egg whites and vanilla.

  7. Pour batter into a greased can floured cake pan.

  8. To make topping, mix together sliced apples, cinnamon and sugar.

  9. Arrange apples attractively on top of the batter.

  10. Bake in oven for 45 - 50 minutes.

  11. Use a toothpick to test for doneness.
