Kids and Gardening, a Healthy Combination

Did you know that kids and gardening are a great combination? Youth of today, are a lot different than their parents and grandparents. But like you, children and teens still find and appreciate the reward in watching something they planted grow into a beautiful flower or a productive vegetable plant.

A great way to introduce your children to the hobby is to give them an indoor houseplant. Teach them how to care for the plant. Then, let them let them take over its care. In addition to introducing them to the hobby of gardening, they learn responsibility.

If your child expresses interest in gardening, give them a small area in your vegetable garden where they can grow anything they want. Or, if they prefer flowers, let them plant and care for a small flowerbed.

What's the Best Plants for Kids to Grow?

When it comes to kids and gardening, basically, kids can grow from seed literally any type of plant they can find. Your children will likely pick plants that interest them. For example, most kids love pumpkins. Or, they will select flowers they like and vegetables that taste good to them. However, that’s not the only decision criteria. Choosing plants that are easy to grow is very important. You don’t want your child to lose interest because the plant died, or the seeds did not sprout. As a result, we offer our suggestion for the best plants for your child to grow in their first gardens. Among them are:

  • Flowers: Marigolds, Sunflowers, Zinnias
  • Vegetables: Beans, soybean, lettuce, radishes, Swiss chard
  • Herbs: Chives, basil

If we had to select just one plant for your child to grow, we would recommend growing sunflowers. The seeds sprout readily, and the plant is easy to grow. Kids and adults alike are often fascinated by the height of the plants and the big, bright yellow flowerheads.
